Celebrating Diversity

Young people are social and harnessing the "cool" factor acts as a contagion for ideas to spread through the student population. I began to use more and more positive approaches to promote issues - fun activities that energized and raised awareness throughout the whole school. Inside and outside of the class, celebrating diversity through these events was part of my effort to create a kinder, more inclusive community, less afraid of difference. We created work in my classes on the theme of celebrating diversity, a large rainbow mural for the school hall way, made banners for the Anishinaabe Teachings of the Four Directions for the library, and organized a week-long series of events that involved the whole school. Through out my career I worked with the Queer and Trans students - supporting them, giving them a social space, sharing and learning from each other, empowering and moving their issues into the main stream. Below are examples of student work from various projects on the subject of diversity completed in class.
